Assembly of Muslim Jurists in America (AMJA) Holds its 5th Annual International Imam Workshop
85 Imams Come Together to Debate the Parameters of Lawful Trade and Professional Practices in Western Society.
Houston, Texas, April 25-28, 2008/--85 Imams from the United States, converged upon Houston, for the 5th Annual Imam Workshop, to debate the parameters of lawful trade and professional practices in non-Muslim society.
The 4-day event, held at the Sheraton North Houston hotel, was a rare opportunity for many renowned Imams representing different mathhabs and masjids, to share the dilemmas felt by people in their respective communities, over limitations to their involvement in various fields and professional activities.
Discussions also focused on the following topics:
- Expectations of and guidelines for participation in the fields of: Finance, Engineering and Construction, Retail and Food Service, Law, Media, and Transportation;

- Addressing unlawful requests and demands of each profession;
|
- Reconciling professional performance with Islamic values and restrictions;
- Sharia-based professional ethics and guidelines.

Last year’s Imam Workshop tackled the issue of “The Benefits and Parameters of Interfaith Dialogue”.
AMJA, established in 2002, is a non-profit scientific organization comprising of a select group of Muslim jurists and scholars, seeking to manifest and clarify the rulings of Shar'iah (Islamic Law) concerning issues and events affecting Muslims residing in the US. AMJA, under the advisement of experts in fields such as economics, finance, law, politics, and medicine, issues fatwas (formal religious opinions or rulings), pertaining to real-life cases and queries submitted to the Assembly, regarding problems and moral dilemmas faced by Muslims in modern American society. Previous fatwas have addressed issues like the transplant of body organs, human-made fertilization and human cloning, etc.
When workshops are not in session, AMJA keeps imams and consultants well-connected and informed using the highest international communication technologies including Emails, web and phone conferences, and the AMJA website, www.amjaonline.com , on the internet, that make contacting those in Tokyo as fast as those in Washington.
AMJA also offers training courses for the Imams and directors of Islamic centers in all juristic fields such as issues of family, finance, and legitimate judging, etc.
